Spike Plate is a drive center for bowl turning.

This tool is for rough tuning green bowl blanks. It is used in place of a screw chuck or faceplate. It’s function is to quickly register center and provide strong grip during the rough bowl shaping and making of the tenon. Spike Plate is made for production bowl turners who are looking to save precious time in their process.

The center post is used for registration. It is important for the safe and efficient use to this tool. Spikes and center post are threaded and therefore, removable and replaceable.

Instructions: Thread the Spike Plate directly on your lathe spindle. Drill a 7/16” hole in your bowl blank (top of bowl gets hole drilled). Use the drilled hole to mount the bowl blank onto the center post. Bring up the tailstock to the center of the bottom of your blank. Lock down the tailstock and dial the live center into the blank for a secure hold. Pressure from the tailstock drives the tips of the spikes into the wood providing grip.

Check the balance of your blank by spinning the bowl blank by hand. If it is wobbling or off center, make adjustments. Do not stress the Spike Plate or your lathe or risk your safety by spinning imbalanced wood. Do not turn wood with checks, cracks, rot etc. Do not run the lathe in reverse.

Spike Plate is made from 6061 aluminum with a clear anodize finish. The face measures 5” across and it stands 2” off the table (not including the spikes and post). Shipping weight is 2 lbs. Spike plate comes standard with 12 1/4” threaded spikes installed and a 3/8” diameter, 7/8” long center post, made of stainless steel. . Spikes are removable and replaceable.
